Be Careful When Choosing Deck Plans

Monday, August 17th, 2009

There are many things to consider when deciding to build a deck. People might think that they have the carpentry skills to try and build the deck by themselves, or they might feel like they need to hire a builder to do the deck construction for them. Either way, there is a need to find deck plans that fit the style of deck that the people want to have built and see if those plans fit the zoning laws for that particular area. If the deck plans are not adequate for a solid design for the deck and the purposes that it will be used for, or if the deck does not fit the zoning laws for that area, the people building the deck are in for a disaster.

Choices

There are many free deck plans available on the web that are adequately designed to use and modify according to the people’s particular situation. However, the deck plans are not the only part of the choices that have to be made when building the deck. One choice is the location of the deck and the purpose that it will be used for. If the people want to hang out on the deck and have cookouts, then having a deck that is on the south side of the home without any shade at all is probably not the best option since it will be too hot to enjoy it most days. If the climate is cooler, or if there are shade trees nearby to give the deck partial shade during the day, then this could be a valid option. The north side of the home is usually not a great choice either unless the climate is warm all of the time since that side does not get sunlight and the deck will be too cool to enjoy on most days.

The deck plans also need to match the use that will be given to the deck. If the deck will be used to surround a pool, then there are different choices in deck plans than if the deck will be used for eating and cooking out. The deck plans should also include the type of railing that will be used with the deck and the people should also consider whether small children or animals will be on the deck and how high the deck will be in the air so that all safety precautions can also be taken into consideration.

There are zoning laws and neighborhood covenants that can also affect the type of deck plans that are used and where the deck is placed. These should all be checked according to the city’s ordinances and the covenants of the neighborhood if the home is located in one. Utility companies and the building department should also be checked to see if there are building permits that are needed and if there are any right of ways or buried power or utility lines that could be a problem.
