Building a Vinyl Deck
Sunday, September 6th, 2009Vinyl decks have become more popular today than every before. In the past, the only decking material that was used was wood. The trouble with wood is that is has to be treated every year so that it is protected from the weather and does not rot or crack. Even with treatment, the wood will end up needing to be replaced since it will wear out. There are also composite materials on the market today that cost more than wood but tend to hold up to the weather much better than the wood by itself. The composite materials are made of wood and plastic, which is why it does not wear out as easily. Vinyl decking and vinyl deck railing materials are the best by far because they do not need treatment and do not wear out like the others do.
Planning
When planning to build a vinyl deck, there are certain things to consider. Building a vinyl deck will cost as much as thirty percent more than building a wood deck, which is why wood is still chosen over vinyl or composite materials most of the time. However, when the cost of treating the wood over the years and the eventual replacement of the wood that will be needed are taken into account, the vinyl deck will end up costing less in the long run. The vinyl decking materials are now printed so that they can look like almost any type of wood that there is on the market today for decking.
Vinyl decking is very easy to clean and is a reflective surface, which means that it will stay cooler than a wood deck in most cases. This can be beneficial when using the vinyl decking around a pool area so that in the heat of summer, the deck is not as hot on the person’s feet. The vinyl decking material does not have to be painted and will not lose its color, so it is almost maintenance free.
When planning for the vinyl deck, the individual should check with the zoning laws and neighborhood codes to make sure that the size and style of deck is permissible. He should also be sure that the deck will be large enough to hold the furniture that he is planning to put there comfortably. He should make sure that the railings and stairs that are chosen are adequate for the children or pets that may be on the deck, especially when there is a pool or hot tub there as well. Safety is always a top consideration when building a vinyl deck and adequate planning helps to ensure that this is the case.
