Choosing to Build a Deck
When choosing to build a deck, planning can make or break the project. If the person is using a builder, the planning can go much more smoothly since the builder will be familiar with the zoning and building codes that must be followed to make the deck safe and long lasting. If the person is building the deck himself, he must not only be aware of the codes, but he must also make the choice between building a wood deck or a vinyl or composite deck, as well as the choices in styles and sizes of the deck itself. It is possible to build a deck from scratch without a builder, but the person should have some experience with wood working so that the process can go more smoothly.
Steps
One of the first steps when building a deck is to find out what all of the codes are in the area that can affect the choice in style and size of the deck. There are zoning and building codes for every area which have some requirements that must be met in terms of the deck that is built. There are also codes that are put in place by subdivisions that limit the styles and sizes of decks that can be added to homes in that area so that everything remains uniform. The individuals should also check with the utility companies to see if there are any hidden pipes or wires that might affect the type of deck that can be built and also where the deck could be built. Once these issues are sorted out, then the individuals can move to the next step in building a deck.
The next step is figuring out where the deck will be placed and how big the deck needs to be. One way to do that is to see how the sunlight hits the various points where the deck could be built. If there is direct sunlight, is there shade from a tree or bush that can offset the heat when it is in the middle of the summer? If not, should there be a roof over part of the deck? The size of the deck being considered should be laid out on the ground, marked and outlines so that the furniture can be placed inside of it to see if it comfortably fits or if there is more room needed. There are often software programs that can help in building a deck, allowing individuals to choose different plans and sizes of decks to see how they will work with the furniture that the individual has. Once the size and area have been chosen, then the individuals will need to choose the specific style and shape of the deck, the type of railings to be used, and if there will be any built in seating around the deck.
